GM Has Received 65,000 Reservations for the New Hummer EV

The GMC Hummer EV Pickup and SUV are electric vehicles that boast huge figures. The pickup truck makes up to 1,000 horsepower, both make up to 11,500 pound-feet of torque, the pickup can get to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, and pricing for the Edition 1 models of both start at above $105,000. The all-electric GMC vehicles now have another large number to pin onto their vests, as General Motors has reportedly received more than 65,000 reservations for the vehicles.

GM Has Orders To Fill For Years

CNBC was the first to report on the high number of reservations. The outlet spoke with Duncan Aldred, GMC's global vice president, who stated that the number of reservations is higher than the automaker originally thought it would receive. The automaker is also seeing a higher number of reservations be converted to orders, too, as 95% of people are choosing to continue the process to buy a Hummer EV Pickup. That figure is also higher than excepted.

"Production's actually slightly ahead of plan and we're putting things in place now to actually expedite that as well, so we can deliver these reservations quicker than we originally thought," Aldred told CNBC. "We're seeing momentum building."

General Motors delivered the first few examples of the Hummer EV Pickup truck before the end of 2021 and more models are expected to arrive this year. But because of the high number of reservations GMC has received for the vehicles and because of the automaker's relatively low production rate for the vehicles, Aldred claims that new orders for the EV Pickup wouldn't be fulfilled until 2024.

Hummer EV Pickup Is More Popular

The automaker didn't provide a breakdown for reservations between the pickup and SUV, but Hummer's assistant marketing manager, Megan Hart, claimed that newer reservations for the EVs have been more evenly split. The automaker has received more overall reservations for the EV Pickup, which makes sense as it came out first.

"What we're looking at now is how can we build the maximum amount and how can we deliver, fulfill these reservations as quickly as possible?" Aldred said. "We're doing all the studies on that and we're confident we can go a lot quicker than we originally thought, but it still means a reservation now probably means delivering in '24."

GM is still in the early days of building the Hummer EV Pickup at its "Factory Zero" plant in Detroit. Unlike all-electric brands, traditional automakers have been slow to retool factories to turn them into hubs for EV production.

With the larger number of reservations and production of the SUV beginning soon, GM is looking to increase production of the Hummer EV line by attempting to obtain more key components for the vehicles, claims Aldred. GM certainly hopes that it can obtain more parts, because it's looking to produce more vehicles than it originally planned to. We can only assume the situation will become worse once the more affordable Hummer EVs become available.
