Avoid Ulez charge
【Summary】Hampton Court Palace in London has revealed a hack for drivers to avoid the ultra low emission zone (Ulez) charge. The palace's car park exit is within the Ulez area, but drivers who turn left and exit the palace will not be seen by the scheme's cameras and will not be charged. The charity managing the palace, Historic Royal Palaces, updated its website to inform visitors of this hack.
Tourists visiting Hampton Court Palace in London have been given advice on how to avoid the city's new ultra low emission zone (Ulez). The charity managing the palace, Historic Royal Palaces (HRP), revealed that drivers who turn left out of the palace's car park will not be detected by the Ulez cameras. The Ulez has recently been expanded to include the outer boroughs of London, requiring drivers of vehicles that do not meet minimum emissions standards to pay a daily fee of £12.50.
The road leading into Hampton Court Palace's car park is located outside the Ulez area, but the road used when exiting the site falls within it. The palace updated the "getting here" section of its website to inform visitors about this. The website stated that cars exiting the palace car park and turning left onto Hampton Court Road will not be seen by the Ulez camera, unless they re-enter the Ulez zone elsewhere with a non-compliant vehicle. The palace also mentioned that Transport for London (TfL) has no plans to change the location of the camera.
Although some of the information was later removed from the website, Historic Royal Palaces tweeted that visitors who turn left out of the car park will not be detected by the enforcement camera and will not be charged. An HRP spokesperson emphasized that their priority is to provide clear information to visitors and to work with TfL to ensure that the most up-to-date information is available.
Hampton Court Palace, located in southwest London, attracts over half a million visitors each year. The expansion of the Ulez zone has sparked controversy, particularly among Londoners.
