DS 7 SUV receives a stylish update

If you're in the market for a car with a luxurious interior reminiscent of a boutique hotel, the DS 7 might be the perfect choice. This large sports utility vehicle offers a unique aesthetic compared to its German rivals, focusing on its French heritage. The interior features diamond patterns in various elements, including switches and the digital instrument display.

Opinions on the design may vary, as some may find it chic while others may see it as a little self-conscious. An example of this contrasting design is the dashboard clock, which has Art Deco-style graphics that don't quite match the Modernist fixtures and fittings surrounding it.

The DS 7, previously known as the DS7 Crossback, has been on the market for the past six years. The new model features a restyled front end with a larger grill, slimmer headlamps, and vertical sidelights resembling claw marks. The rear lamp clusters have also been slimmed down, and changes to the brightwork give the DS 7 a refreshed appearance.

Inside, there are design tweaks as well. The dash features a large touch screen with widgets, making it fairly straightforward to navigate. However, like many high-end cars, the multitude of functions can be a bit overwhelming.

When it comes to power options, the DS 7 offers 1.5-liter diesel versions and plug-in hybrids with 1.6 petrol engines. The hybrids come with either one or two electric motors, depending on whether they have four-wheel drive. Unfortunately, there are no petrol-only versions available.

We had the opportunity to drive an Opera E-TENSE 4x4 300, one of the five different trim levels available. This model utilizes electric motors to boost performance and switch between petrol and battery power. The car can also be driven in electric-only mode, with a claimed range of around 43 miles. However, our experience showed that the battery ran out in about half that distance.

Charging options include charging the car while driving or using a 7kw EV charger for a two-hour top-up. A domestic socket trickle charge takes approximately six and a half hours.

There are a few criticisms to note. The front doors lack electric window switches and instead have them located on the outer edges of the center console. The parking brake switch is also in the same area, which can lead to accidental activation. Additionally, the brakes initially feel spongy, requiring a firm push to engage, which can result in a less-than-smooth stop.

Despite its size, the DS 7 doesn't prioritize sportiness. However, it is still quick, reaching 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and capable of a top speed of 146 mph. While some of its rivals may have a harsh ride due to low-profile tires and stiff springing, the DS 7's suspension, with three settings, is firm yet comfortable. On 4x4 versions, the suspension is controlled by a computer with a camera that scans the road surface for imperfections, adjusting the ride stiffness accordingly. The car also surprises with nimble and precise steering around bends.

Mechanical refinement is generally good, with the car being virtually silent in electric mode. The four-cylinder 1.6 petrol engine can sound busy at times, but it remains unobtrusive. The DS 7 is a peaceful companion, especially on motorways, where wind buffeting is minimal.

The upgraded headlamp cluster performs well, providing a broad spread of white light to illuminate country lanes. The DS 7 is packed with features, from electric reclining rear seats to a comprehensive suite of safety and driver aids. Some functions, such as controlling the interior temperature and managing the plug-in charging system, can even be controlled remotely via phone.

In conclusion, the DS 7 is a thoroughly pleasant car with ample space for passengers and their belongings. It offers a comfortable driving experience and is equipped with numerous safety and convenience features. While it may not have the same brand recognition as BMW or Mercedes, the DS 7's niche appeal sets it apart and makes it a unique choice for buyers.
