Electric Nissan Juke And Qashqai Get Inspiration From 'Hyper' Concepts
【Summary】Nissan will produce electric versions of the Juke and Qashqai SUVs, inspired by its "Hyper" concept cars, alongside the next-gen Leaf at its Sunderland plant in the UK. The automaker is investing up to $3.75 billion in the production of these three EVs, as well as three battery gigafactories and related infrastructure. The Sunderland hub will manufacture the EVs and battery cells, with the electricity needed supplied by renewable sources.
Nissan has announced its plans to build all-electric versions of its Juke and Qashqai SUVs, as well as the next-gen Leaf, at its plant in Sunderland, UK. The company confirmed that these new electric vehicles will draw inspiration from its "Hyper" series of concept cars recently showcased at the Japan Mobility Show.
In total, Nissan will be investing up to £3 billion ($3.75 billion) in the production of these three EVs, as well as the construction of three battery gigafactories in partnership with Envision AESC. This investment also covers the necessary infrastructure at the Sunderland plant.
The EV36Zero hub in Sunderland will be responsible for manufacturing the three electric vehicles and producing battery cells for them at the three gigafactories. Of the total investment, £1.12 billion ($1.41 billion) will be allocated for research and development, as well as the manufacturing of the electric Juke and Qashqai. This includes improvements to facilities and manufacturing processes, skills training, and tooling for suppliers.
Additionally, Nissan has already invested £423 million ($531 million) in the first phase of EV36Zero for the successor to the Leaf, which is set to begin production in Sunderland in 2026.
Nissan has revealed that the design of the future Qashqai EV will be influenced by the Nissan Hyper Urban Concept, while the Juke EV will take inspiration from the Hyper Punk Concept. It was previously announced that the Chill-Out Concept from 2021 would provide inspiration for the next Leaf.
More information about the upcoming EVs, including their names, specifications, and launch dates, will be provided by Nissan at a later time. The company's President and CEO, Makoto Uchida, expressed excitement about the role of electric vehicles in achieving carbon neutrality and emphasized that the EV36Zero project positions the Sunderland plant as the center of Nissan's future vision.
Nissan has also confirmed that the electricity required for the production of EVs and batteries in Sunderland will be sourced from the EV36Zero Microgrid, which generates 100% renewable electricity from the company's wind and solar farms, including a new 20MW solar farm.
It is worth noting that Nissan has previously announced that all its new cars in Europe will be fully electric, with the goal of having its entire passenger car lineup in Europe be 100% electric by 2030.
