EV innovation shaping future driving

Electric vehicles (EVs) have gained significant popularity in recent years and their growth shows no signs of slowing down. As of August 2023, there were approximately 850,000 fully electric cars and 530,000 plug-in hybrids on UK roads.

However, despite the interest in EVs, not everyone fully understands their advantages and it will take time and investment to transition from traditional combustion engine cars to EVs. In order to support this transition, it is crucial for related industries, such as lubricant manufacturers, to continue innovating. This raises the question of how we can help consumers better understand the benefits of owning an EV and encourage widespread adoption.

One of the advantages of EVs is their simplified maintenance. EVs require different maintenance compared to traditional cars, as they only need to cover fluid applications encountered in electrified powertrains. This simplified maintenance often appeals to consumers interested in EVs, especially as workshops offer reliable support and insight for those transitioning from traditional cars.

The increase in consumer action in buying EVs can be attributed to several factors. More EV models are available across different price points, expert resources and maintenance services are becoming more trustworthy, and consumer products are better and more accessible. Additionally, there is a greater awareness and improvement of the negative environmental impact of EV production, waste, and batteries, which is driving change in these areas.

While there are barriers to owning hybrid cars and EVs, such as cost and infrastructure, these barriers vary widely by region. Many consumers are unaware that they can save money in the long term by using an EV. However, there is a global improvement in EV infrastructure, with a 50% increase from the previous year. Concerns around battery pollution and range have also been reduced as EV education becomes more accessible and automotive practices become more circular.

Consumers can adjust their lifestyle to work seamlessly with EVs by checking the availability of charging stations in their local area and utilizing them when needed. The UK has seen a significant increase in public charging points, with a 40% increase in the total number of charging devices installed in the last 12 months. Consumers should also research financial incentives available for EV purchases and charging station installations, such as the UK government's Plug-In grant.

Innovation is happening within the supply chain and automotive-adjacent industries to provide consumers with the best EV products. Supply chains are becoming more streamlined and sustainable, with a focus on reducing plastic packaging. Lubricant technology is also constantly evolving to meet the needs of new electric and hybrid models. Partnerships and co-engineering efforts are driving efficient innovation, with EV fluids playing a pivotal role in keeping up with the latest generation of EVs.

The future of EVs and hybrid vehicles looks promising, thanks to continual government regulation and investment in EV infrastructure, as well as ongoing innovation in the automotive sector. Significant developments in digitization, battery management, and autonomous vehicles are expected in the near future. However, it is important to prioritize the customer experience and ensure that the evolving technologies meet their needs.
