EV revolution in Indonesia

Hyundai Motor is committed to leading the expansion of the electric vehicle industry in Indonesia. The company aims to offer customers a wide range of electric vehicle options and establish a comprehensive ecosystem that includes EVs, charging infrastructure, and battery recycling.

President Lee Young-tack of Hyundai Motor Asia-Pacific Headquarters stated, "Hyundai Motor is a brand that is pioneering and leading the Indonesian EV market. We plan to introduce a full lineup of EVs and continue to release affordable models to meet the diverse needs of consumers."

In the first half of next year, Hyundai will launch the Kona Electric, its latest all-electric compact sport utility vehicle, in Indonesia. The Kona Electric will be the first locally manufactured car from Hyundai equipped with locally produced batteries. It will not only be available in Indonesia but also exported to other Southeast Asian countries.

Hyundai Motor aims to lead the ASEAN EV market by enhancing local EV value chain competitiveness and focusing on innovative products and customer experiences. The company is constructing ASEAN's first complete EV chain by building a joint battery cell plant with LG Energy Solution in Kawarang New Industry City in West Java, Indonesia.

With an Indonesian vehicle manufacturing plant that has an annual capacity of up to 250,000 units, Hyundai plans to foster Indonesia as the hub for battery production and supply in the ASEAN region. The company also aims to create a sustainable future for its EV customers by establishing an EV ecosystem that covers charging infrastructure, battery reuse, and recycling.

In September, Hyundai signed a memorandum of understanding with Lippo Malls Indonesia to install EV charging stations in 52 shopping malls nationwide. Lee emphasized the company's pioneering efforts in actively targeting the EV market, highlighting that the number of EVs sold in Indonesia has reached 13,545 as of October this year, compared to zero in 2019.

Lee noted that the ASEAN EV market is expected to grow faster than other emerging markets, such as India and South America. He mentioned that Thailand and Malaysia will lead the early phases of market expansion, while Indonesia and Vietnam will be at the center of the mid- to long-term growth. Lee also mentioned that the ASEAN auto demand is projected to have over 15% EVs by 2030.

Lee will deliver a speech on the Indonesian EV market and Hyundai Motor's strategy during the Korea-Indonesia Cooperation Forum on November 30 in Jakarta, commemorating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
