Ford has introduced a new layout for its latest campervan, the Transit Custom Nugget. The interior has been redesigned to prioritize campers' needs, with a modular cabin layout that allows for easy access to cooking, seating, and sleeping areas. The new design also frees up 20% more countertop space and includes cabinets with a soft-close feature to reduce noise.

In terms of aesthetics, the Transit Custom Nugget features a sleeker design compared to its predecessor, with thinner headlights and a new grille featuring a light bar running across the top. The rear of the campervan has smaller tail lights than the outgoing model, giving it a more modern look.

The Ford Transit Custom Nugget is built on the same platform as the Transit Custom van and is a result of a collaboration with German campervan specialist Westfalia. It will offer a plug-in hybrid option, keeping up with its competitor, the Volkswagen California, which also offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The interior of the Transit Custom Nugget is designed for comfort and functionality. The front seats can swivel around to face the rear when parked, maximizing the use of space. There is also a second row of seats, allowing for a total of five occupants when on the move.

The cabin of the Transit Custom Nugget includes two double bed spaces. One is created by folding down the rear seating area, while the other is accessible by popping up the Dormer roof. The roof section can be folded to increase headroom over the kitchen area. An optional solar panel on the roof can help charge the battery when off-grid.

In addition to its camping features, the Transit Custom Nugget offers high-tech amenities such as a 5G modem for WiFi access and a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen that controls ambient lighting, onboard heating, and provides information on water and battery levels.

Powering the Transit Custom Nugget is a range of engine options. The diesel version will come with a 2.0-litre EcoBlue turbocharged engine and an eight-speed automatic gearbox, available in front or all-wheel drive. There will also be a plug-in hybrid option with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor and an 11.8kWh battery.

Ford has made improvements to the Transit Custom's chassis, including more sophisticated independent rear suspension for a smoother driving experience. The campervan will also offer driver assistance technologies such as active cruise control and a 360-degree camera for better visibility when parking.

The diesel version of the Ford Transit Custom Nugget will be available for sale in Autumn 2023, with deliveries expected in spring 2024. The plug-in hybrid model will be released a year later. Pricing has not yet been announced, but the entry-level diesel models are expected to start from over £60,000.
