Fulton County jail stabbing leaves 1 inmate dead, 2 injured

At the troubled Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia, one inmate was killed and two others were injured during a stabbing spree on August 31, 2023. The stabbings occurred on the seventh floor of the jail and are believed to be gang-related, according to police reports.

The prison has been under scrutiny after the US Department of Justice launched an investigation into the death of inmate LaShawn Thompson in 2022. Thompson's body was found covered in filth and insects, with the cause of death attributed to being "eaten alive by bed bugs." His family was awarded a $4 million settlement earlier this year.

In addition to the recent stabbings, the prison has seen a total of nine inmate deaths this year, with five of them occurring within the past month. This alarming record has drawn criticism, including from former president Donald Trump, who was briefly booked at the jail after his arrest on charges related to Georgia's 2020 election results.

Trump described the jail as violent and falling apart, with inmates resorting to digging their fingers into the crumbling walls to fashion weapons. He claimed that seven inmates had died in the jail this year alone. Trump's arrest has raised the possibility that he could be housed in the dilapidated prison if convicted of any of the 13 counts against him.

Aside from the poor conditions, the Department of Justice is also investigating reports of violence, potential discrimination against individuals with disabilities, healthcare access, and other alleged violations at the Fulton County Jail.
