Genesis Earns Trio of IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Awards for GV60, GV70, and GV80

If a vehicle receives the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), it is considered to be as safe as possible. Genesis, the luxury division of Hyundai, recently earned three of these awards for their sport utility vehicles (SUVs).

While the Top Safety Pick+ award is prestigious, there is still room for improvement. The GV60, Genesis' first-ever electric vehicle, scored acceptable for the ease of use of the child seat anchors. The GV70, available with both internal combustion and electric propulsion, was rated advanced instead of superior for vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention. The larger GV80 earned acceptable ratings for headlights and child seat anchors.

Despite these areas for improvement, all three vehicles performed well in crashworthiness evaluations. They excelled in tests such as small overlap front crash, moderate overlap front crash, and side crash tests. Genesis is known for offering top-notch safety features, including multiple airbags, Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist, and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, which can detect cyclists and pedestrians.

The GV60, which shares a platform with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, is currently available in limited numbers in select states. The 2024 model starts at $60,550 for the Advanced version and $69,550 for the Performance AWD. However, the Performance AWD's range is not impressive, with only 235 miles on the combined test cycle, while the Advanced AWD fares slightly better at 248 miles.

The US-spec GV70 and Electrified GV70 for the 2024 model year are manufactured at HMMA (Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama). Starting at $44,900, the GV70 is available with different engine options, including a 2.5-liter turbo, 3.5-liter turbo, or all-electric powertrain.

The GV70 shares the same platform as the larger GV80, which gained attention when professional golfer Tiger Woods crashed one in February 2021. Despite the severe accident, Tiger survived with injuries. The safety of the GV80 likely played a significant role in protecting him.
