Genesis GV60, GV70, and GV80 Receive Three IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Awards

If a vehicle is awarded the Top Safety Pick+ accolade by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), it means that the automobile is considered to be as safe as possible. In a remarkable achievement, Genesis, the luxury division of Hyundai, recently received three such awards for their sport utility vehicles (SUVs).

However, it is important to note that there is still some room for improvement when it comes to the Top Safety Pick+ accolade. For example, the GV60, which is Genesis' first-ever electric vehicle based on the Hyundai E-GMP electric vehicle architecture, scored only acceptable for the ease of use of the child seat anchors (LATCH). The GV70, available with both internal combustion and electric propulsion, was rated as advanced instead of superior for both daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention. The larger GV80, which is more luxurious, received an acceptable rating for the headlights and child seat anchors.

Despite these areas for improvement, it is worth highlighting that all three of these vehicles performed exceptionally well in crashworthiness evaluations. These evaluations include tests such as the driver- and passenger-side small overlap front crash test, moderate overlap front crash test, and side crash test. Genesis represents the best of what Hyundai has to offer, so it is no surprise that the GV crossovers mentioned above earned the prestigious IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. Each of these vehicles comes equipped with at least eight standard airbags, as well as features like Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, which can detect cyclists and pedestrians.

The GV60, which is twinned with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, is currently available in limited numbers at select retailers in 23 states. The 2024 model starts at a price of $60,550 (excluding destination charge) for the Advanced version, while the Performance AWD variant costs $69,550. Although the Performance AWD can generate an impressive 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque for short bursts, its range is not as impressive, with only 235 miles on the combined test cycle. The Advanced AWD version also falls short in terms of range, offering 248 miles.

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) is the facility where Hyundai produces the US-spec GV70 and Electrified GV70 for the 2024 model year. The GV70, which shares the Hyundai-Kia M3 platform with the GV80, starts at a price of $44,900 and is available with a 2.5-liter turbo, 3.5-liter turbo, or all-electric powertrain. It is worth noting that professional golfer Tiger Woods survived a serious car accident in February 2021 when he crashed a GV80 on Hawthorne Boulevard in Los Angeles. The fact that he survived such a severe crash is a testament to the safety of the GV80.
