GM launches affordable Baojun electric vehicle in China

General Motors' joint venture in China, SGMW, has recently launched the Baojun Cloud electric hatchback. The starting price for this vehicle is 95,800 yuan ($13.2K). SGMW is a collaboration between General Motors, SAIC, and Wuling Motors, and it sells cars under the Wuling and Baojun brand names.

One of SGMW's previous releases was the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, an affordable microcar that quickly gained popularity in the market. In fact, within a year, the Mini EV surpassed Tesla's Model 3 sales in the region. This success led to the introduction of variations such as the Mini EV convertible and the Wuling Air EV (also known as the MG Comet in India), which was SGMW's first international electric vehicle.

Building on the success of the Mini EV, SGMW has recently launched the Baojun Yep, an all-electric vehicle that resembles a mini Ford Bronco. This car has generated a lot of excitement in China's market. Additionally, SGMW introduced the Wuling Bingo, an EV priced below $10,000, which achieved impressive sales numbers in its first month.

The latest addition to SGMW's lineup is the Baojun Cloud EV. This electric hatchback is available in four versions and starts at 95,800 yuan ($13.2K). It measures 4,295 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, and 1,652 mm in height. The Baojun Cloud EV is expected to compete with models like the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3.

The Baojun Cloud EV offers two battery options: 37.9 kWh and 50.6 kWh. These provide a cruising range of 360 km (223 mi) and 460 km (285 mi) respectively. Inside the vehicle, there is an 8.8-inch full LCD instrument screen and either a 10.1-inch or 15.6-inch central control screen. It also features LingOS 2.0 ecological cockpit, making it a technologically advanced option.

In response to the competitive EV market in China, Volkswagen recently reduced prices for its ID.3 electric car. This move has proven successful, with SAIC-VW reporting a 300% increase in ID.3 sales last month.
