The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has called on the government to consider several factors as it conducts a new inquiry into the electric vehicle (EV) experience. The inquiry aims to gather feedback from industry and customers regarding the challenges they face with EVs, as the government evaluates the feasibility of its 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles.

Hayley Pells, the IMI's policy and public affairs lead, expressed full support for the UK government's ambition to transition to zero-emission vehicles. She emphasized the importance of understanding the barriers, costs, and benefits associated with the 2030 and 2035 phase-out dates. Pells welcomed the involvement of the Environment and Climate Change Committee, led by Baroness Parminter, in seeking input from both the automotive sector and motorists. The IMI, with its unique insights across the automotive industry, is committed to contributing to the inquiry and working alongside the government, its members, and the wider industry to achieve a seamless transition to electric vehicles.

Pells stressed the vital role of incentivizing a robust UK EV market. While acknowledging the aggressive nature of the phase-out dates, she believes they are achievable through collective efforts, industry partnerships, and clear policy. Pells called for the development of a clear roadmap, including key dates and timelines, to assist all stakeholders in preparing for the transition.

In addition to incentives and infrastructure, Pells urged the government to consider solutions for battery disposal and recycling. She emphasized the importance of assessing the entire lifecycle of EVs when evaluating their sustainability.
