Jaguar's new era begins with electric four-door GT

Jaguar is preparing for its all-electric future with the development of a £100,000 four-door GT. A new image gives us a glimpse of what to expect from the striking design, which diverges from the current lineup of Jaguar cars. The GT features distinct squared-off angles and a wide stance, along with solid surfacing and advanced aerodynamic treatment. The design is expected to be complemented by razor-thin tail-lights and a prominent diffuser to boost range.

According to Adrian Mardell, the new JLR boss, there is a clear desire to take Jaguar in a fresh direction with a new visual identity that expresses the brand's emotion. The design team at Jaguar produced multiple options for consideration, and the image we see here represents the first interpretation of the new design language. Mardell describes it as "jaw-dropping" and it was the unanimous choice of everyone involved.

The development process, known as Project Renaissance, was initiated by JLR's Chief Creative Officer, Gerry McGovern. Three teams within JLR's design studio were given a common brief to create three distinct types of vehicles. In just three months, they produced 18 clay-model proposals. It is expected that prototypes of the new GT will be tested on the road by the end of the year, with an official unveiling planned for April or May 2024 and sales scheduled for 2025.

Furthermore, the GT design hints at what's to come for the two new crossovers that will complete the Jaguar lineup. Mardell emphasizes the importance of creating a family look. As part of JLR's Reimagine strategy, Jaguar is being fully rebooted and positioned alongside Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery as one of the four brand pillars of JLR. The GT, along with the other two cars, will be manufactured at the Solihull plant, which will also produce the all-electric Range Rover.

The GT is set to become the most powerful Jaguar production car ever made, surpassing the brand's existing EV, the I-Pace, in terms of range and charging capacity. While specific motor outputs and performance figures have not been released, Jaguar claims the new model will have up to 700km (435 miles) of range and be capable of adding around 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes of rapid charging.
