Lucy Letby's inclusion among UK's infamous child murderers

A nurse has been revealed as the worst serial killer of children in modern UK history. Lucy Letby, 33, was found guilty of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder six more while working on a neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016.

The jury deliberated for 22-and-a-half days before reaching their verdicts in this highly publicized criminal trial. Letby now faces life behind bars, joining the ranks of the UK's most twisted child murderers.

One such notorious name is Beverley Allitt, who served 13 life sentences for her crimes committed in the 1990s. Allitt, a paediatric nurse, attacked 13 children admitted for minor injuries at Grantham and Kesteven Hospital in Lincolnshire. She injected some of them with dangerous amounts of insulin, resulting in the deaths of four children. Allitt was found guilty of four counts of murder, three of attempted murder, and six of grievous bodily harm in 1993. She is currently imprisoned at Rampton Secure Hospital in Nottinghamshire.

Another infamous case is that of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, who kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and murdered children between 1963 and 1965. Brady, along with Hindley, buried the bodies on the moors above Manchester. Brady was sentenced to three concurrent life sentences in 1966 for killing three children, and later confessed to two additional murders. Hindley received two life sentences plus seven years for her involvement. They both avoided the death penalty due to its abolition before their trial concluded. Hindley died in prison in 2002, while Brady passed away in a psychiatric hospital in 2017.

Robert Black, a Scottish serial killer, was found guilty of murdering four schoolgirls in the 1980s. His first known murder was in 1981 when he abducted, sexually assaulted, and killed nine-year-old Jennifer Cardy in Northern Ireland. Black's youngest victim was five-year-old Caroline Hogg, who he abducted, killed, and dumped her body over 300 miles away from her Edinburgh home. He was also convicted of killing 10-year-old Sarah Harper in Leeds and 11-year-old Susan Maxwell in Coldstream, Scotland.
