Roofless hypercar: Pininfarina's sleek and pricey electric ride

Automobili Pininfarina has unveiled its latest electric vehicle (EV), the B95, at Monterey Car Week. This roofless hypercar is being hailed as the world's first pure-electric, open-top hyper Barchetta, with a top speed of over 186mph and an acceleration time of under two seconds. The Munich-based EV manufacturer plans to produce just 10 examples of the B95, each priced from €4.4 million, making it more expensive than a Bugatti Chiron. The hand-built hypercars will be delivered from 2025, coinciding with the 95th anniversary of Pininfarina SpA.

The B95's design is a combination of flowing open-topped bodywork and exquisite technical details, creating a dramatic interpretation of a classic racer. It features a high-capacity, liquid-cooled 120kWh lithium-ion battery, generating peak power of 1,400kW (1,878bhp). The battery can be charged using DC fast chargers up to speeds of 270kW, allowing for a 20 to 80% charge in just 25 minutes. The B95 also boasts four independent electric motors, one driving each wheel, and five different driving modes with full torque vectoring technology.

The B95's design is receiving high praise for its swooping bodywork, which wraps around the front bumpers and rolls over the wheel arches, creating a muscular appearance. The barchetta design means there is no enclosed cabin, and there is no windscreen or glass. However, the open-top driving experience is enhanced by electronically adjustable aero screens, inspired by vintage fighter planes and motorcycles. The lightweight polycarbonate screens can be raised and lowered with the press of a button, providing some wind protection at high speeds.

The interior of the B95 is described as a combination of classic race car design and futuristic elements. The driver is faced with a central portrait digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, flanked by a pair of screens. The cockpit design, including the seats and carbon-fiber dashboard, seamlessly merges with the exterior, creating a flowing aesthetic. The show model is wrapped in tan 'sustainable luxury leather' to replicate the look of a classic race car. Clients can also order bespoke helmets to match their chosen B95 specification.

The B95 is being hailed as an elegant, bold, beautiful, and innovative design that celebrates the 95th anniversary of Pininfarina. Paolo Pininfarina, chairman of Pininfarina SpA, states that the B95 will continue the legacy of creating rare icons and deliver a statement of intent for Automobili Pininfarina. Dave Amantea, the chief design officer, adds that the B95 combines classic proportions with exquisite detailing to create something truly special. He believes it redefines the joy of driving and introduces exceptional, electrified performance in stunning open-top form.
