V8's surprising return

Mercedes-AMG is set to make a surprising change to its V8-powered C63 sports sedan, abandoning the smaller and more efficient engine that was recently introduced. According to reports from European media outlets, the slow sales of the new four-cylinder C63 have led Mercedes-AMG management to reconsider their strategy and make a dramatic turnaround. It is said that the company is already making preparations to install the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 into the sports sedan by 2026, even though the new C63 has not yet been released in Australian showrooms.

The new C63 boasts a Formula 1-inspired 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with electric motor boost, generating an impressive 500kW of power and 1020Nm of torque. However, it appears that AMG buyers are not particularly enthusiastic about the idea of a four-cylinder C63 after having experienced years of V8 power.

While Mercedes has neither confirmed nor denied the speculation from European media, the company has previously stated its intention to update the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 in order to comply with the upcoming EU7 emissions regulations, ensuring that the engine can still be used in various models.

Although the V8 engine was removed from the C63, it continues to be utilized in several AMG models, such as the S63, SL63, and G63. However, in order to meet the new regulations, the V8 will likely require some form of hybrid assistance in the future. AMG has already demonstrated this solution with the recent unveiling of the GT 63 S E Performance, which combines the 4.0-litre V8 with an electric motor to produce 620kW and 1400Nm of torque.

It remains to be seen whether such a system can be accommodated within the smaller body of the C63. Nevertheless, it appears that Mercedes-AMG has recognized the continued demand for V8 engines, despite stricter emissions regulations and the increasing popularity of electric vehicles.
