V8's surprising return

Mercedes-AMG is considering a surprising comeback for its V8-powered C63 sports sedan, abandoning its recently introduced smaller and more efficient engine. Reports from European media suggest that slow sales of the new four-cylinder C63 have prompted Mercedes-AMG management to reassess their strategy and prepare for a dramatic change. The company is said to be preparing to install the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine into the sports sedan by 2026, even though the new C63 has not yet been released in Australia.

The latest C63 model features a Formula 1-inspired 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor boost, producing an impressive 500kW of power and 1020Nm of torque. However, AMG buyers seem to be hesitant about the idea of a four-cylinder C63 after being accustomed to the power of V8 engines for years.

While Mercedes has not confirmed or denied the speculation from European media, the company has previously expressed its intention to update the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 to comply with the upcoming EU7 emissions regulations, ensuring its usability in various models.

Despite being dropped from the C63, the V8 engine continues to be used in several AMG models, such as the S63, SL63, and G63. However, to meet the new regulations, the V8 engine will likely require some form of hybrid assistance in the future. AMG has already demonstrated this solution with the recent introduction of the GT 63 S E Performance, which combines the 4.0-liter V8 with an electric motor, resulting in an output of 620kW and 1400Nm.

It remains to be seen whether such a hybrid system can be accommodated in the smaller C63 body. Nevertheless, it appears that Mercedes-AMG has identified a continued demand for V8 engines despite stricter emissions regulations and the growing popularity of electric vehicles.
