Zeekr X review

Verdict: Zeekr is set to challenge Europe's premium car manufacturers with the introduction of the Zeekr X. While the small electric SUV has its flaws, it offers a classy interior and unique design and technology features that make it stand out among its competitors. The Zeekr X is best suited for relaxed driving, and the flagship AWD powertrain may be unnecessary for most drivers, despite the tempting price difference. Zeekr is a Chinese brand owned by Geely, a conglomerate that also owns well-known brands like Lotus, Volvo, Polestar, and Smart. The Zeekr X is positioned as a compact electric luxury car and shares Geely's Sustainable Experience Architecture platform with the Smart #1 and #3, as well as the Volvo EX30.

Zeekr, founded in 2021, already has three models on sale, including the Zeekr 001 'shooting brake' hatchback and the Zeekr X small SUV. Both models are expected to enter the UK market in the next few years. The Zeekr X offers good passenger space for its compact size, with room for four large adults and a 362-litre boot. In terms of size, it falls between supermini-sized SUVs like the Peugeot and Smart, and larger mid-size SUVs like the Mercedes EQA and upcoming Smart #3. The Zeekr X is available in rear-wheel-drive, single-motor form or with dual motors and four-wheel drive, offering impressive power and acceleration.

The Zeekr X features a 69kWh battery that provides WLTP ranges of 277 miles for the single-motor version and 264 miles for the dual-motor model. While these ranges are competitive, using the performance capabilities of the car may result in lower efficiency. The Zeekr X offers a 22kW onboard AC charger and a 150kW DC rapid-charging capacity, allowing for quick charging times. The car also includes a circular digital display that shows the charging status. The Zeekr X stands out with its bold styling, distinctive crease lines, and unique headlights.

Inside, the Zeekr X features a minimalist design with a 14.6-inch touchscreen that centralizes controls for various functions. The interior design and quality reflect Zeekr's premium aspirations, although some lower-quality plastics can be found in certain areas. The car offers limited storage space, with wide door pockets and a small frunk. Unique features include a wireless phone-charging slot in the center armrest and a built-in sunglasses holder. The infotainment system includes a pet mode that allows owners to leave their pets in the car with climate control set to a comfortable temperature. The car also features external speakers that can play animal noises, pre-recorded messages, or engine sounds.

The touchscreen interface of the Zeekr X can be complex and less responsive at times, although wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available. The car includes a standard head-up display and offers a comfortable driving position with ample headroom. The dual-motor variant of the Zeekr X provides impressive power, but it can be challenging to control due to its size and lack of upgrades outside of the powertrain.
