2023 Mercedes-AMG E 53: spotted in saloon and estate versions

Mercedes recently introduced the sixth-generation E-Class, and it seems that the AMG E 53 versions are not far behind. Previous spy pictures showed the E 53 being tested in both saloon and estate forms, but the latest images reveal cars with less camouflage, giving us a clearer look at these hot executive cars. The Mercedes-AMG E 53 is expected to be fully revealed later this year, preceding the more powerful E 63 iteration.

While the overall design of the E 53 will not deviate significantly from the standard E-Class, the E 63 will have a more aggressive exterior design. However, there are a few noticeable tweaks that will help the E 53 stand out from the less sporty variants. These test cars feature a distinct grille and a larger lower air intake in the front bumper, along with larger alloy wheels that house a more robust braking system. Additionally, the rear of the car showcases AMG's traditional quad-tip exhaust layout and a rear diffuser.

The new E-Class boasts advanced technology, with the most significant change being the inclusion of a new 'Superscreen' infotainment system. This system, which is essentially a smaller version of the Hyperscreen setup, offers a range of features and menus. Mercedes typically adds extra data and menus to its AMG cars, so we can expect some new performance-focused features on the E 53.

Under the hood, it is likely that the E 53 will be equipped with the same turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six engine found in the S580e, combined with a battery. This powertrain is expected to produce around 503 horsepower and 750 Newton-meters of torque, which is a significant increase compared to the outgoing E 53's 429 horsepower and 520 Newton-meters of torque. The new E 53 will face competition from Audi's updated S6 and the latest BMW 5 Series.

In the UK, Mercedes is only offering the new E-Class in sporty AMG Line trim due to market demand. Therefore, it is likely that the high-performance E 53 will make up a significant portion of the sales. However, some buyers may choose to wait for the arrival of the E 63 model instead.
