The second-generation Mercedes AMG GT is set to be a strong competitor to the iconic Porsche 911. The design features active airflow elements at the front and a rear spoiler that deploys at higher speeds. Additionally, Mercedes offers a choice between a fixed wing made from plastic or carbon fibre.

The overall look of the AMG GT is an evolution of the original model, with a longer wheelbase and a front-end design in line with Mercedes' current styling direction. The rear showcases a gently sloping roofline and muscular rear wheel arches. This design allows for respectable rear headroom and a surprisingly large boot, with a capacity of 321 litres, increasing to a maximum of 675 litres.

The new AMG GT shares its platform with the AMG-developed SL, making it a 2+2 with small rear seats. This additional practicality aims to give customers one less reason to choose the Porsche 911.

The AMG GT comes with a choice of twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engines, each paired with a nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox and four-wheel drive. The first version to be released is the AMG GT 63 4MATIC+, which boasts 577bhp and 800Nm of torque, reaching 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds. The AMG GT 53 4MATIC+ follows with 469bhp and 700Nm, completing the sprint in 3.9 seconds. Top speeds for the two models are 195mph and 183mph respectively.

Mercedes has equipped the AMG GT with advanced chassis technology. The car features rear-axle steering, adaptive dampers, an electronic limited-slip differential, and a semi-active hydraulics-based anti-roll bar system. It also offers an optional ride-height 'lifter' that raises the car by up to 30mm for speed bumps and inclines.

Inside the AMG GT, there is a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 12.8-inch portrait-layout touchscreen infotainment system, borrowed from other Mercedes models. The car comes with an AMG Performance steering wheel as standard, and there are options for personalization such as AMG Performance seats and carbon-ceramic brakes.

Mercedes has not yet released final specifications or pricing details. However, with the brand's move upmarket and the enhanced seating layout, it is expected that the new AMG GT will come with a significant price increase, potentially starting at £125,000.

Unlike its predecessor, the new AMG GT will not have a Roadster variant, as that role will be filled by the SL. Nevertheless, Mercedes is likely to produce a GT3 racing version and higher-performance roadgoing models, potentially including hybrids with a power output exceeding 700bhp.
