The second-generation Mercedes AMG GT is set to be a strong rival to the iconic Porsche 911. The design incorporates a number of aerodynamic features, such as active airflow elements at the front and a rear spoiler that deploys at higher speeds. In addition to this, Mercedes will offer a choice of a fixed wing made from plastic or carbon fibre.

The overall look of the new AMG GT is an evolution of the original model, with a longer-looking wheelbase and a front-end design that aligns with Mercedes' current styling direction. The rear features a gently sloping roofline, which not only contributes to the aggressive appearance but also provides ample rear headroom and a surprisingly large boot with a capacity of 321 litres, increasing to a maximum of 675 litres. The rear three-quarter angle showcases the muscular rear wheelarches of the AMG GT.

The new model shares its platform with the AMG-developed SL, transforming it into a 2+2 with small rear seats, similar to the majority of Porsche 911 variants. Mercedes aims to offer customers additional practicality, giving them one less reason to choose the Porsche option.

The AMG GT comes with a choice of twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engines, each paired with a nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox and four-wheel drive. The first version to be released is the AMG GT 63 4MATIC+, which boasts 577bhp and 800Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 3.2 seconds. Following this, the AMG GT 53 4MATIC+ will be available with 469bhp and 700Nm, achieving the 0-62mph sprint in 3.9 seconds. The top speeds for these models are 195mph and 183mph respectively.

The AMG GT is equipped with advanced chassis technology, including rear-axle steering, adaptive dampers, an electronic limited-slip differential, and a semi-active hydraulics-based anti-roll bar system that controls the optional ride-height 'lifter'. The car can switch from rear-wheel drive to a four-wheel drive system with a variable split to the front, allowing for rear-drive mode or up to a 50:50 split if necessary.

Inside the AMG GT, there is a range of technology borrowed from other Mercedes models, such as a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The standard features include an AMG Performance steering wheel, but there is also room for customization with options like AMG Performance seats and carbon-ceramic brakes.

Although final specifications and pricing have not yet been announced, it is expected that the new AMG GT will have a higher starting price than the current model, potentially starting at £125,000. Unlike the previous model, there will not be a Roadster version of the AMG GT this time, as that role will be fulfilled by the SL. However, Mercedes is likely to produce a GT3 racing variant and higher-performance roadgoing versions, possibly with hybrid technology that could exceed 700bhp in total power.
