Mitsubishi Minivan EV: Extended Range, Japan Launch

Mitsubishi Motors has announced that it will be upgrading its Minicab-MiEV all-electric vehicle for 2024, in response to the growing demand for electric light commercial vehicles. The new model, called Minicab EV, is specifically designed for urban commercial use and will be available for purchase in Japan starting December 21.

Mitsubishi introduced the Minicab platform back in 1966 with a kei-class combustion-engine pickup truck. Since then, they have released various other models, including a kei van based on the same platform. In recent years, many major players in Japan's kei car segment have been focusing on electrifying their offerings and introducing zero-emission variants of their commercial vehicles. Mitsubishi joined this trend by launching the Minicab i-MiEV, the world's first mass-produced electric car, in 2009, followed by the Minicab-MiEV, an electric version of their popular kei van, in December 2011.

The new Minicab EV is an evolution of the Minicab-MiEV, which has sold approximately 13,000 units since its launch 12 years ago. The updated model comes with a larger battery for an improved cruising range and enhanced safety and convenience features, specifically tailored to meet the needs of commercial customers. Design-wise, it remains similar to its predecessor, featuring utilitarian styling and a compact monobox design that makes it ideal for last-mile delivery services in urban areas. The vehicle will be available as a two-seat cargo van with ample storage space or a four-seater for operators who require less cargo space.

The Minicab EV is equipped with side and rear doors for easy access to the cargo compartment. Its compact design allows for easy navigation through crowded city streets and fitting into tight parking spots for efficient package unloading. The most significant changes come in the form of the compact zero-emission powertrain. The 2024 Minicab EV model will feature a new generation of electric components, including an integrated motor drive with a 31-electric motor and inverter in a single casing. This integration reduces volume, lowers cost, and ensures quieter operation. The electric motor produces 195 Nm of torque, although the top speed has not been disclosed.

In terms of range, the Minicab EV will draw power from a 20-battery pack that promises an extended cruising range of 180 km or 112 miles per charge in WLTC mode, representing a 35% increase compared to the previous model. Recharging the battery fully using 200V (15A) AC will take approximately 7.5 hours. The vehicle also offers optional compatibility with DC fast charging stations, allowing the battery to reach 80% capacity in around 42 minutes.

Additional upgrades include safety features such as Automatic High Beam (AHB), ABS, SRS, hill-start assist, lane departure alerts, front collision mitigation, parking sensors, and airbags. The Minicab EV also comes with improved front and rear shocks for a smoother ride. Noteworthy convenience features include a 100-volt AC power outlet at the rear of the floor console for powering tools and appliances, as well as optional USB ports for charging mobile devices while on the move.

As of now, there is no information regarding international availability for the Mitsubishi Minicab EV. The vehicle will be available for purchase in Japan on December 21, with the two-seat version priced at ¥2,431,000 (US$16,300) and the four-seater priced at ¥2,486,000 (US$16,640), the same price as the previous model. With its improved cruising range and enhanced safety features, the 2024 Minicab EV presents an attractive option for businesses aiming to reduce their carbon footprint and operating costs.
