2023 RZ EV: Lexus Continues Luxury Tradition

Over the past few years, downtown Los Angeles has been difficult to see clearly due to smog and weather conditions. Even on my recent visit to Griffith Park in a new Lexus RZ 450e, the brand's first fully-electric model, the skyline was still hazy. Despite improvements in air quality, southern California still has a long way to go before clear days outweigh hazy ones. The hope is that the electrification revolution and advancements in battery technology will help improve air quality and visibility. The question remains, is the Lexus RZ the right electric vehicle to lead us into that future?

The exterior design of the Lexus RZ hasn't undergone any drastic changes, and that turned out to be a good thing. The driving experience of the RZ feels entirely natural, which is a departure from the perception that electric vehicles are radically different from traditional combustion-powered cars. From the moment you sit behind the wheel, the RZ gives off a sense of normalcy, making it an ideal gateway EV for Lexus loyalists. While you can feel the electric powertrain when you accelerate, there is a slight pause before the dual-motor all-wheel-drive system fully engages, delivering 308 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. The RZ can go from 0 to 60 mph in around 4.8 seconds.

During my two-day test drive, the RZ proved to be luxurious, easy to drive, and capable. Despite its curb weight of around 4,600 lbs., the RZ stays planted in corners, thanks to its suspension setup and frequency reactive dampers. The softness of the suspension also helps absorb road bumps and textures, providing a comfortable ride. The real-world range of the RZ aligns with Lexus' estimates, offering approximately 220 miles of range on standard 18-inch wheels. Charging the RZ on a 150-kW charger can bring the battery from almost empty to 80% in just 30 minutes.

Inside the RZ, you'll find a posh and lovely environment. The seats are supportive and comfortable, and the reductive design creates an airy and spacious feeling. The centerpiece of the cabin is a 14-inch infotainment touchscreen that controls almost every feature of the RZ. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, while the Luxury model offers a premium Mark Levinson Surround Sound system and ambient interior lighting. Both trim levels come with driver aids like adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist, providing confidence and convenience on the road.

Range anxiety is a real concern for EV drivers, especially if the range is under 200 miles. To address this, Lexus offers RZ buyers a unique perk: 30 complimentary days of gas-powered loan vehicles for the first three years of ownership. This allows for longer road trips without the worry of finding charging stations everywhere.

In conclusion, the Lexus RZ presents a compelling case for transitioning to electric vehicles. However, the ultimate goal of clean air and clear skies is still a work in progress.
