2024 Ford Puma EV: Extended Range, Affordable Price
【Summary】Ford is planning to phase out combustion-engined vehicles in Europe and the UK by 2030, and the Puma subcompact crossover is crucial to this transition. A zero-emission version of the Puma is expected to be released in 2024, with a starting price of €36,000. It is predicted to have a driving range of around 400 kilometers, making it a competitive option in the market. The Puma EV will be based on the Global B-car vehicle architecture and will likely feature one-pedal driving mode.
Ford of Europe is facing challenges in market share and profitability, but the company is determined to transition to an EV-only lineup in the European Union and the United Kingdom by the end of the decade. The Puma subcompact crossover, manufactured in Romania, plays a crucial role in this transition.
The Puma, introduced in 2019, is named after a small coupe produced from 1997 to 2002. It replaces the Fiesta in Ford's European lineup and offers a range of 1.0- and 1.5-liter turbocharged engines. The front-wheel-drive Puma will be joined by an electric version in 2024.
According to Auto Bild, a leading German motoring publication, the Puma EV is expected to have a starting price of 36,000 euros, which is approximately $39,300 dollars. This price is comparable to other B-segment crossovers like Peugeot's e-2008 and significantly lower than the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense.
The Puma EV is estimated to have a driving range of around 400 kilometers according to the WLTP combined test cycle, making it a competitive option in this segment. Production of the Puma EV will occur alongside the combustion-engined versions of the Puma.
Ford has adapted the Global B-car vehicle architecture for the Puma EV instead of developing a new platform. This platform is also used by the Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier, small vans that offer different engine options including an electric drive unit.
The E-Tourneo Courier, a five-seater van with a range of 87 kilometers in 10 minutes of charging, was launched in May 2023. The Puma EV is expected to debut by 2024 and is likely to feature a one-pedal driving mode, similar to the E-Tourneo Courier and E-Transit Courier panel van.
However, Ford has not yet confirmed the battery capacity and WLTP combined range of either van.
