2024 Peugeot 508 PSE Fastback: Initial Test Drive

Peugeot has recently updated its entire 508 line-up, including the high-performance Peugeot 508 PSE Fastback. The new model features refreshed exterior styling and significant updates to the interior technology. While the car now offers a new plug-in hybrid option, many of the drivetrain choices from the previous 508 family remain the same. To determine if the Peugeot 508 PSE is still a viable high-performance car with an ecological spin, we took it for a test drive.

Styling

The Peugeot 508 PSE stands out with its enlarged gloss black radiator grille, giving it a more aggressive appearance. Other notable features include large alloy wheels, an enhanced lower body kit, and the signature three Kryptonite-coloured diagonal lines. The facelift has also introduced a 'three-claw' arrangement for the daytime running lamps and slimline matrix LED headlights. Overall, the Peugeot 508 PSE remains an attractive car with noticeable aesthetic updates.

Interior

The main changes to the interior of the Peugeot 508 PSE are centered around the infotainment system. The car retains its central ten-inch touchscreen for non-driving-related information, while the i-Cockpit layout with a small, low-set steering wheel and high-mounted instrument pod remains unchanged. However, the graphics have been updated with the latest software from other Peugeot models, allowing for more customization. The gear selector has also been redesigned, resulting in a new center console/transmission tunnel. The PSE model features sporty add-ons such as bucket seats with Alcantara upholstery and bright-green stitching. Overall, the interior is high-quality and comfortable.

Practicality

The Peugeot 508 PSE Fastback offers decent storage space with 487 litres in the boot, expandable to 1,537 litres with the second row of seats folded. However, rear headroom may be limited for taller individuals. Those seeking greater practicality may prefer the 508 SW estate model with a minimum boot space of 530 litres. The idiosyncratic i-Cockpit layout may also impede the driver's view of the digital dials for some individuals, which can be a potential drawback. Overall, the Peugeot 508 PSE provides reasonable practicality.

Performance

The Peugeot 508 PSE is equipped with a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid drivetrain, combining a 200hp 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with front and rear electric motors powered by a 12.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The total power output is 360hp, with peak torque reaching 520Nm. The car can accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds and has a top speed of 155mph. It offers a theoretical fuel economy of 157mpg, emits 40g/km of CO2, and has an all-electric driving range of 34 miles. The power is transmitted through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The Peugeot 508 PSE delivers impressive performance and acceleration.

Ride & Handling

The Peugeot 508 PSE offers excellent grip and balance, allowing it to navigate corners with ease. However, the car's handling may not be as engaging or exciting as expected, as the engineers have prioritized competence over excitement. The performance may also be affected when the battery pack is depleted. The car features fixed paddle-shifts with movable toggles for gear changes, which may not be as satisfying as those found in competitor models. The ride quality is generally good, although the variable dampers can create an edgy feel due to the large alloy wheels and brake discs. The overall refinement levels and low noise levels in the cabin are impressive. The Peugeot 508 PSE provides a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience.

Value

The Peugeot 508 PSE comes with a generous range of standard equipment, including Night Vision, Nappa leather and Alcantara upholstery, adaptive suspension, 20-inch wheels, and a high-power Focal sound system. The car also offers various tax benefits for company car owners and lower running costs compared to petrol or diesel alternatives. However, with a starting price of £53,975, the Peugeot 508 PSE may be considered expensive by some, especially considering its four-cylinder powertrain. While it is a technically impressive car, other models in the 508 range may offer better value for money.

Verdict

The revised Peugeot 508 PSE is an attractive and well-equipped car that offers reasonable practicality and impressive performance. However, its high price and lack of outright thrills may deter some buyers. While the Peugeot 508 PSE is a technically impressive car, those seeking a more affordable option or greater driving excitement may prefer other models in the 508 range or look elsewhere.
