2024 Vauxhall Crossland successor brings back Frontera

The ageing Vauxhall Crossland will soon be replaced by a new small SUV, and our spy photographers have captured the car testing once again. The new model, like its Mokka sibling, will offer both petrol and electric power options and may bring back the Vauxhall Frontera name. Vauxhall is undergoing a design revolution, with the Astra now a stylish hatchback and the Mokka transformed into a sleek SUV. The upcoming small crossover, set to arrive in 2024, will provide more space and utility for practicality-focused buyers. The latest spy pictures give us a glimpse of the new Frontera's design, featuring a boxier and more conventional SUV shape with a bluff front end, Vauxhall 'Vizor' grille, tall roofline, and flatter rear. This shift in positioning will make the Crossland replacement a competitor for family cars like the Dacia Jogger and Duster SUV, and the Citroen C3 Aircross. The overall design aims to convey a chunky and robust look compared to the fashion-forward Mokka.

Despite its compact footprint, the new Crossland replacement will offer a good level of luggage room and interior space. It may even be available with three rows of seats, similar to the Jogger, to maximize usability. The latest images show the car being tested at higher speeds, revealing a more upright stance that results in noticeable body lean. However, the suspension and damping are still under development. The Crossland replacement is expected to use the same CMP platform found in other Stellantis SUVs like the Citroen C4, DS 3, and Jeep Avenger. While the Frontera name has not been confirmed, Opel's Chief Operating Officer, Uwe Hochgeschurtz, has hinted at the possibility of reviving historical badges, including Frontera, for future products.

The move to the CMP platform means that the new car will offer various powertrain options, including pure-petrol, mild-hybrid petrol, and full EV. The petrol engine is likely to be Vauxhall's 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo, available in 99bhp and 128bhp outputs, with the choice of a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. It is also expected to feature a 48-volt mild-hybrid option, similar to the updated Corsa, which will provide an electrified version of the 1.2-litre unit producing 136bhp and paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Vauxhall has previously announced plans to offer a fully electric version of its entire lineup by 2024. The CMP platform has been upgraded to accommodate a bigger 54kWh battery and a more powerful 152bhp motor, which could potentially be available in the new SUV. The smaller battery and less powerful motor combination is currently offered in the Mokka Electric, providing a range of 209 miles.

The new SUV will feature a tech overhaul inside, likely including Vauxhall's Pure Panel infotainment system. The Mokka offers a range of digital dash and infotainment screens, with larger options available depending on the trim level. The pricing for the Crossland replacement is expected to start below £25,000, with the all-electric model likely to cost around £36,000. The car is set to be revealed in the first half of 2024.
