Amazon Increases Rivian EDV Fleet to 10,000 Vehicles

Amazon has reached a significant milestone with its Rivian-built Electric Delivery Vehicle (EDV) fleet. The company now has over 10,000 EDVs on the road, which is double the size compared to four months ago. This suggests that production of the EDV at Rivian's plant in Normal, Illinois, has increased in recent months. In July 2023, Amazon announced that it had 5,000 EDVs on US roads, so the fleet has grown rapidly since then.

Rivian does not provide a breakdown of vehicle production by model. However, in the third quarter of 2023, the company manufactured a record 16,304 battery-electric vehicles (including R1S, R1T, and EDV models) at its Illinois factory.

By taking delivery of 10,000 EDVs, Amazon has added 10 percent of the 100,000 Rivian vans it pledged to purchase in 2019 and put on the road by 2030. It's worth noting that Rivian missed its initial target to deliver the first 10,000 electric vans to Amazon by 2022.

Amazon reaffirmed its commitment to the fastest rollout of an electric delivery fleet in the United States during its Delivering the Future event on October 17. Since July 2022, when the electric delivery vans hit the road, they have successfully delivered over 260 million packages to customers in more than 1,800 cities across the US.

The Rivian EDVs are currently operating in numerous cities, including Alpharetta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Grand Rapids, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Madison, Miami, Nashville, New York, Newark, Oakland, Omaha, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Provo, Rochester, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Jose, Santa Rosa, Seattle, St. Louis, Tampa, and Toledo. Additionally, the company is expanding its van operations to Anaheim, Green Bay, Lexington, and Silver Spring.

With the fleet growing rapidly, Amazon is also focused on upgrading its charging infrastructure. The company has already installed over 12,000 chargers in more than 100 delivery stations to support its electric vehicles.

It's important to note that Amazon's efforts to electrify its delivery fleet extend beyond the United States. In Germany, for example, the company started incorporating Rivian EDV 500 vans into its fleet in July 2023.

By 2030, Amazon expects that its fleet of 100,000 electric vans will contribute to saving millions of metric tons of carbon emissions annually.
