Suzuki plans to export Indian-made electric vehicles to Japan in 2025

Japan's Suzuki Motor plans to export electric vehicles (EVs) made at its Indian subsidiary, Maruti Suzuki's Gujarat plant, to Japan starting in 2025, according to the Nikkei daily. The company aims to make India its global electric car manufacturing hub and is considering supplying India-made EVs to partner Toyota Motor for European markets as well.
"Suzuki will export EVs made in India to Japan as early as 2025. It plans to sell to Europe too under its own brand and it is also considering supplying to Toyota Motor for sale on the continent under a partnership it had formed with its Japanese peer," the report stated. If the supply deal with Toyota goes through, the EVs will be sold under the Toyota brand.
Last year, Suzuki announced a Rs 10,440 crore investment in India to manufacture electric vehicles and batteries for EVs. A significant portion of this investment, Rs 3100 crore, will be used to increase the manufacturing capacity for electric vehicles at Suzuki Motor Gujarat in 2025. Additionally, Rs 7300 crore will be allocated to establish a plant for manufacturing batteries for electric vehicles in 2026. The remaining resources will be utilized to set up a vehicle recycling plant by Maruti Suzuki Toyotsu in 2025, according to earlier reports.
Suzuki Motor Corporation has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State of Gujarat in March 2022. The agreement was made during the India-Japan Economic Forum held in New Delhi and was witnessed by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
