Bentley's Organic Leather Unveiled in New Vehicle

Bentley is taking steps to make its iconic quilted interiors more sustainable by developing a fully organic leather for its cabins. As part of its "Beyond 100" plan to become more environmentally friendly, the British automaker will debut the eco-friendly material in a new Bentley model at Monterey Car Week in California on August 18.

The new leather is made from highly traceable hides that are a by-product of the meat industry, preventing them from going to landfill. Bentley ensures that all hides used in its cars are sourced in the European Union and avoids using hides linked to deforestation. This reflects the company's efforts to encourage greener processes within its supply chain.

What sets this new leather apart is its sustainable tanning process. The leather is subject to a tanning agent derived from the wastewater extracted during olive pressing. This process results in a higher concentration of renewable chemicals and eliminates harmful metals, minerals, and aldehydes. The end product is an organic leather that is incredibly soft, according to Bentley.

Leather is an integral component of Bentley's car interiors and plays a significant role in creating the brand's signature finish. It is also hardwearing, which is particularly important as the majority of Bentley cars built are still on U.K. roads. The automaker plans to offer this new organic leather across its entire product range.

Bentley's commitment to sustainability is evident in its Beyond 100 strategy, announced in November 2020. The company is investing $3.4 billion over the next decade to electrify its lineup and achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. This latest innovation demonstrates that Bentley can pursue its green goals without compromising on style.

As Monterey Car Week comes to a close, stay tuned for Robb Report's recap of the event.
