BMW is embarking on a pilot project with a fleet of nearly 100 hydrogen vehicles, as the company continues to explore sustainable mobility solutions.

The BMW iX5, which has been in development for four years, is now being deployed internationally for trial purposes. This model offers an impressive range of 313 miles, making it a viable option for long-distance travel.

One of the key features of the iX5 is its hydrogen fuel cell, which is powered by two 700-bar tanks made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). These tanks can be filled up in just three to four minutes, providing a quick and convenient refueling experience.

In a statement, Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, highlighted the importance of hydrogen in the energy transition process. He emphasized that hydrogen is a versatile energy source that can efficiently store and transport renewable energies.

Zipse also stressed the significance of hydrogen in achieving emission-free mobility. He stated, "Hydrogen is the missing piece in the jigsaw when it comes to emission-free mobility. One technology on its own will not be enough to enable climate-neutral mobility worldwide."

Furthermore, the BMW iX5 is part of the company's larger sustainability goals. It is a key component of the Group's 'Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign', which aims to achieve full climate neutrality throughout the value chain.

Looking ahead, the BMW Group plans to reduce CO2 emissions per vehicle over its full lifecycle by at least 40% by 2030, compared with 2019 levels. This commitment demonstrates the company's dedication to reducing its environmental impact and promoting sustainable transportation.
