【Summary】Jeep designer, Daniele Calonaci, says the brand will continue with its signature boxy design for its electric vehicles, despite trends towards crossovers. Calonaci believes that customers still value high ground clearance and a commanding driving position, even with electrification. This commitment to a boxy design may result in slightly reduced range but will ultimately satisfy customers who prioritize space and functionality.

Boxy Off-Roaders Are Here To Stay

Jeep is known for its distinctive product range, characterized by the iconic seven-slot grille and boxy styling that unifies all its models, from the rugged Wrangler to the luxurious Grand Wagoneer. According to Daniele Calonaci, the designer of the all-electric Avenger, this design theme will continue in the electric era.

In an interview with Top Gear, Calonaci revealed that Jeep will not be following the trends of other automakers. While many companies are venturing into the crossover segment, Jeep intends to maintain its boxy design. Calonaci explained that there is still a demand for high ground clearance and a commanding driving position, especially among those who are looking for electrified vehicles.

However, Calonaci acknowledged that this design choice may result in some compromises. He mentioned that it could lead to minimal headroom and trunk space. He cited the example of other crossovers on the highway during the summer, where roof boxes are commonly used because there is limited space in the trunk. Despite this, Jeep is committed to remaining boxy, even if it means sacrificing a small amount of range, approximately 1.2 miles, in order to ensure customer satisfaction.
