Tesla Roadster Assembly Now Possible at Home

EV giant Tesla Inc TSLA has announced that it is making all design and engineering of its original Roadster fully open source. The Tesla Roadster, which first debuted in 2008, was the company's first vehicle.

CEO Elon Musk made the announcement on X, formerly Twitter, stating, "All design & engineering of the original Tesla Roadster is now fully open source. Whatever we have, you now have." He also noted that while individuals could potentially build their own roadster in their garage, some assembly would be required.

However, it is important to note that the disclosed research and development documents on the Tesla website are not intended for manufacturer reference. The website warns users that if they choose to use this information, they are responsible for following all laws and safety protocols, as Tesla does not provide any warranties for work done by non-Tesla personnel.

The announcement holds significance as Tesla announced a new generation of the Tesla Roadster, a descendant of the original, six years ago in September. Initially set to be available in 2020 with a price tag of around $200,000, the production timeline for the vehicle has been delayed multiple times. According to the latest timeline provided by Musk in a conversation with Ford CEO Jim Farley in May, production of the new Roadster is expected to begin by the end of next year, with design and engineering to be completed this year.
