DS 7 SUV receives a refresh

If you're in search of a car with the luxurious feel of a boutique hotel, the DS 7 might be the perfect choice. Unlike its German counterparts, such as the Audi Q3, the DS7 offers a unique French aesthetic. The interior of the DS7 reflects this, with diamond patterns found in various fixtures and fittings, including switches and the digital instrument display.

Opinions on the overall look of the DS7 may vary. For example, the dashboard clock features Art Deco-style graphics that may seem out of place with the Modernist design elements surrounding it. Personal taste will ultimately determine whether this combination is chic or self-conscious.

The DS7 has actually been available for the past six years under the name DS7 Crossback. The new model features a restyled front end with a larger grill, slimmer headlamps, and vertical sidelights reminiscent of claw marks. The rear lamp clusters have also been slimmed down, and changes to the car's brightwork indicate a refreshed design.

Inside the DS7, there are design tweaks as well. The central dash features a large touch screen with widgets, making navigation fairly straightforward. However, like many high-end cars, the abundance of functions can be slightly overwhelming.

Power options for the DS7 include 1.5-liter diesel versions and plug-in hybrids that utilize 1.6-liter petrol engines. The hybrids may have one or two electric motors, depending on whether they have four-wheel drive. Unfortunately, there are no petrol-only versions available.

We had the opportunity to drive an Opera E-TENSE 4x4 300, one of five different trim levels with rather cryptic names. This particular model uses electric motors to enhance performance and switch between petrol and battery power. The car can also be driven in electric-only mode, offering a range of approximately 43 miles, although our experience showed a shorter range.

Charging the car can be done while driving or by plugging it into a 7kw EV charger, which takes around two hours for a full charge. A domestic socket trickle charge will take approximately six and a half hours.

One criticism of the DS7 is the location of the front door's electric window switches, which are placed on the outer edges of the center console. The parking brake switch is also located in the same area, leading to accidental stops when the driver's window switch is mistakenly pulled. The brakes themselves are strong, but the pedal can feel spongy at first, requiring a firm push to engage.

Despite its size, the DS7 is surprisingly quick, reaching 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and capable of a top speed of 146 mph. While some of its rivals may have stiffer rides due to low-profile tires and stiff springing, the DS7's suspension, which has three settings, provides a firm yet comfortable ride. 4x4 versions of the DS7 have a computer-controlled suspension system that adjusts the ride stiffness based on road surface imperfections.

For a large car, the DS7 offers nimble and precise steering, making it surprisingly agile around bends. Mechanical refinement is generally good, with the car being virtually silent in electric mode. The four-cylinder 1.6-liter petrol engine can sound busy at times, but it remains unobtrusive overall, providing a civilized and serene driving experience.

The upgraded headlamp cluster on the DS7 effectively illuminates country lanes with a broad spread of white light. The car is equipped with various features, including rear seats with electric reclining functions and a suite of safety and driver aids. Some functions, such as controlling the interior temperature and managing the plug-in charging system, can be controlled remotely via phone.

In conclusion, the DS7 is a luxurious and spacious car with a pleasant driving experience. Packed with safety and convenience features, it offers a unique alternative to more well-known brands like BMW and Mercedes. While it may not be a common sight on the road, for certain buyers, its niche appeal is part of its charm.
