DS 7 SUV receives an updated look

If you're in search of a car that offers the ambiance of a boutique hotel, the DS 7 might be the perfect choice. This large sports utility vehicle aims to provide a different aesthetic compared to its German rivals, such as the Audi Q3. The DS7 focuses on its French-ness, evident in its interior fixtures and fittings that feature diamond patterns, from switches to the digital instrument display.

The overall look of the DS 7 can be a matter of personal taste. For instance, the dashboard clock spins into view when the starter button is pressed, featuring Art Deco-style graphics that may seem out of place among the Modernist fixtures and fittings surrounding it.

The DS7, previously known as the DS7 Crossback, has been around for the past six years. The new model receives design updates, including a re-styled front end with a larger grill, slimmer headlamps, and vertical sidelights resembling claw marks. The lamp clusters at the rear have also been slimmed down, and changes to the DS7's brightwork indicate a refreshed appearance.

Inside, there are design tweaks as well. The dash features a large touch screen that is fairly straightforward to navigate, although the multitude of functions can be a bit intimidating, as is common with modern high-end cars.

When it comes to power choices, the DS 7 offers 1.5-liter diesel versions and plug-in hybrids with 1.6 petrol engines. The hybrids come with one or two electric motors, depending on whether they have four-wheel drive or not. Unfortunately, there are no petrol-only versions available.

We had the opportunity to drive the Opera E-TENSE 4x4 300, one of the five different trim levels available. This model utilizes electric motors to boost performance and switch between petrol and battery power. It can also be driven in electric-only mode, with a claimed range of around 43 miles. However, in our experience, the battery ran out in about half that distance.

Charging the car can be done while driving or by plugging it into a 7kw EV charger, which takes approximately two hours for a full charge. A domestic socket trickle charge, on the other hand, requires about six and a half hours.

There are a few criticisms of the DS 7. The front doors lack electric window switches, which are located on the outer edges of the center console. The parking brake switch is also located in the same area, which can lead to accidental stops when trying to operate the window switch. Additionally, the brakes initially feel spongy, requiring a firm push to engage, which can result in less-than-smooth stops.

Despite its size, the DS 7 does not have many sporting pretensions. However, it is still a quick car, reaching 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and capable of 146 mph. The suspension, with three settings, is firm but generally not jarring. On 4x4 versions, the suspension is controlled by a computer with a camera that scans the road surface for imperfections, adjusting the ride stiffness accordingly. The DS 7 also offers nimble and precise steering, surprising for its size.

Mechanical refinement is generally good, with the car being virtually silent in electric mode. The four-cylinder 1.6 petrol engine can sound busy at times, but it never becomes intrusive. The DS 7 provides a comfortable and serene driving experience, especially on motorways, with minimal wind buffeting.

The upgraded headlamp cluster effectively illuminates country lanes with a broad spread of white light. As an expensive car, the DS 7 is packed with various features, including rear seats with electric reclining functions and a suite of safety and driver aids. Some functions, such as controlling the interior temperature and managing the plug-in charging system, can be controlled remotely via phone.

All in all, the DS 7 is a thoroughly pleasant car, offering ample space for passengers and their belongings. It is enjoyable to drive and comes equipped with safety and convenience features. While it may lack the brand recognition of BMW and Mercedes, the DS 7's niche appeal may be part of its charm, making it a unique choice for certain buyers.
