DS 7 SUV receives an updated look

If you're in search of a car with an interior reminiscent of a boutique hotel, the DS 7 might be just what you're looking for. This large sports utility vehicle aims to offer a different aesthetic compared to its German rivals, such as the Audi Q3, by emphasizing its French design. The interior fixtures and fittings reflect this, with diamond patterns found in various elements, including switches and the digital instrument display.

Opinions on the DS 7's design may vary, as some may find it chic while others may see it as a bit self-conscious. One example of this is the dashboard clock, which spins into view when the starter button is pressed. Its Art Deco-style graphics may seem out of place among the modern fixtures and fittings that surround it.

The DS 7, previously known as the DS7 Crossback, has been around for the past six years. The new model features a re-styled front end with a larger grill, slimmer headlamps, and vertical sidelights that resemble claw marks. The lamp clusters at the rear have also been slimmed down, and changes to the DS 7's brightwork indicate that the car has been refreshed.

Inside, there are design tweaks as well. The center of the dashboard features a large touch screen with widgets, making navigation fairly straightforward. However, like many modern high-end cars, the DS 7 offers a multitude of functions that may be a little intimidating.

There are several power choices available for the DS 7, including 1.5-liter diesel versions and plug-in hybrids with 1.6 petrol engines. The hybrids can have either one or two electric motors, depending on whether they have four-wheel drive. Unfortunately, if you prefer a petrol-only version, you're out of luck.

We had the opportunity to drive an Opera E-TENSE 4x4 300, one of the five different trim levels available. This particular model utilizes electric motors to boost performance and switch between petrol and battery power. The car can also be driven in electric-only mode, with a claimed range of around 43 miles. However, in our experience, the battery ran out in about half that distance. Charging options include charging while on the move or using a 7kw EV charger, which takes approximately two hours for a full charge. A domestic socket trickle charge requires around six and a half hours.

While the DS 7 has many positive aspects, there are a few criticisms. For instance, the front doors lack electric window switches and instead have them located on the outer edges of the center console. The parking brake switch is also located in the same area, leading to accidental activation and sudden stops. Additionally, the brakes themselves feel a bit spongy initially, requiring a firm push to engage, which can result in a less-than-smooth stop.

Despite its size, the DS 7 doesn't have many sporting pretensions. However, it is still a quick car, capable of reaching 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and achieving a top speed of 146 mph. Some of its rivals may have unyielding rides due to low profile tires and stiff springing, but the DS 7's suspension, with three settings, is generally firm yet comfortable. The 4x4 versions feature a computer-controlled suspension that adjusts the ride stiffness based on road surface imperfections.

For its size, the DS 7 offers nimble and precise steering, surprising drivers with its ability to handle bends with precision. Mechanical refinement is also good, with the car being virtually silent in electric mode and the four-cylinder 1.6 petrol engine never intrusive. The DS 7 provides a serene driving experience, especially on motorways, with minimal wind buffeting.

The upgraded headlamp cluster effectively illuminates country lanes with a broad spread of white light. As an expensive car, the DS 7 is packed with features, including rear seats with electric reclining functions and a suite of safety and driver aids. Some functions, such as controlling the interior temperature and managing the plug-in charging system, can be controlled remotely through a phone.

All in all, the DS 7 is a thoroughly pleasant car with ample space for passengers and their belongings. It offers a nice driving experience and is equipped with safety and convenience features. Although it may lack the brand recognition of BMW and Mercedes, the DS 7's niche appeal may be part of its charm for certain buyers.
