Dudley Metropolitan Council is set to begin the installation of 37 new on-street electric vehicle (EV) charging points across the borough. The £420k scheme is being funded through a grant from the Office of Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and a contribution from a charge-point operator.

Last year, the council conducted a consultation on 53 proposed EV charge point locations. Of these, 37 were chosen based on majority support and will now host the metre-high charge points. The posts have been designed to be small and unobtrusive, sitting at the edge of the footway. They aim to cater to residents who wish to own an EV but don't have their own driveway or access to off-street charging facilities.

The charge points will have a charging capacity of 7kW, which can provide a full charge in approximately six hours.

Councillor Dr Rob Clinton, cabinet member for climate change, emphasized the importance of these charge points in Dudley borough's approach to EV charging. He stated that they will not only assist residents who face challenges in charging their electric vehicles at home, but also contribute to reducing emissions as part of the Black Country Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle Strategy. He added, "This is just one of many small changes we are making at a local level which cumulatively will have a big impact."

Councillor Damian Corfield, cabinet member for highways and environmental services, highlighted the convenience and safety benefits of the charge points. He mentioned that the installation process is expected to take around four days and will cause minimal disruption to residents. The investment will provide thousands of residents with access to EV charge points on their street, eliminating the need for them to install their own points at home.

The EV chargers will be available to the public and will feature a Pay-As-You-Go payment system at a minimum. Each charge point installation, including signage and road markings, is estimated to take up to a week. Additionally, a consultation for proposals on further charge points in more locations across the borough is set to launch in the coming weeks.
