Ford has unveiled its latest campervan, the Ford Transit Custom Nugget, built in collaboration with German campervan specialist Westfalia. The new Nugget features a redesigned interior, with a modular cabin layout that allows for easy access to cooking, seating, and sleeping areas. Ford claims that the new layout provides 20% more countertop space and includes soft-close cabinets to reduce noise.

The exterior of the Transit Custom Nugget has also been updated, with a sleeker design that includes thinner headlights and a new grille featuring a light bar. The rear of the campervan features smaller tail lights compared to the previous model.

One of the standout features of the Ford Transit Custom Nugget is its versatility. The front seats can swivel around to face the rear when parked, maximizing the use of interior space. The campervan also has a second row of seats, allowing for a total of five occupants when on the move.

The cabin of the Transit Custom Nugget offers two double bed spaces. One bed is created by folding down the rear seating area, while the other is accessible by popping up the Dormer roof. The roof section also features a foldable mattress, providing increased headroom over the kitchen area when needed. An optional solar panel on the roof can help charge the battery when off-grid.

In addition to its practical features, the Transit Custom Nugget also includes high-tech amenities. These include a 5G modem for WiFi access, a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen for controlling ambient lighting and onboard heating, and providing information on water and battery levels.

The Ford Transit Custom Nugget will be available with different powertrain options. The diesel version will come with a 2.0-litre EcoBlue turbocharged engine and an eight-speed automatic gearbox, available in front or all-wheel drive. There will also be a plug-in hybrid option, featuring a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor and an 11.8kWh battery. Performance figures for the plug-in hybrid version have yet to be confirmed.

Ford has improved the Transit Custom's chassis with independent rear suspension, aiming to provide a more car-like driving experience. The campervan will also offer all-wheel drive, making it more capable in light off-road conditions. Driver assistance technology, such as active cruise control and a 360-degree camera, will enhance safety and visibility.

The diesel version of the Ford Transit Custom Nugget is expected to go on sale in Autumn 2023, with deliveries starting in spring 2024. The plug-in hybrid model will be available a year later. Pricing details have not been announced yet, but the entry-level diesel models are expected to start from over £60,000.
