GM introduces affordable Baojun Cloud EV in China

General Motors' joint venture in China, SGMW, has introduced the Baojun Cloud electric hatchback to the Chinese market. The compact EV is priced at 95,800 yuan ($13.2K) and is available in four versions: 360 Plus, 360 Pro, 460 Pro, and 460 Max, with prices ranging from 95,800 yuan to 123,800 yuan ($17.1K).

SGMW, a collaboration between General Motors, SAIC, and Wuling Motors, is known for selling vehicles under the Wuling and Baojun brand names. In 2020, they launched the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, a highly affordable microcar that surpassed Tesla's Model 3 sales in the region within a year of its release.

Following the success of the Mini EV, SGMW expanded its electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of the Mini EV convertible and the Wuling Air EV (also known as the MG Comet in India), marking the company's first international EV.

Building on the momentum of the Mini EV, SGMW has recently launched the Baojun Yep, a compact electric vehicle that resembles a mini Ford Bronco. This release has generated significant excitement in China's automotive market.

Additionally, SGMW unveiled the Wuling Bingo, priced below $10,000, which achieved an impressive 16,383 deliveries in its first month on the market. This marks the joint venture's second electric vehicle release this year.

The Baojun Cloud EV, with dimensions of 4,295 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, and 1,652 mm in height, is expected to compete against the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3. The BYD Dolphin, slightly smaller than the Baojun Cloud EV, measures 4,125 mm in length, 1,770 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height.

The Baojun Cloud is offered with two battery options: 37.9 kWh and 50.6 kWh, providing a cruising range of 360 km (223 mi) and 460 km (285 mi) respectively. The interior features an 8.8-inch full LCD instrument screen and either a 10.1-inch or 15.6-inch central control screen. It is also the first model to showcase LingOS 2.0 ecological cockpit.

In response to the competitive EV market in China, Volkswagen recently reduced prices for its ID.3 electric car. This move has proven successful, with SAIC-VW reporting a 300% increase in ID.3 sales last month, reaching 7,378 units.
