GM introduces affordable Baojun Cloud EV in China

General Motors' joint venture in China, SGMW, has launched the Baojun Cloud electric hatchback, with prices starting at 95,800 yuan ($13.2K). SGMW is a collaboration between General Motors, SAIC, and Wuling Motors, and it sells vehicles under the Wuling and Baojun brand names.

In 2020, SGMW introduced the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, an affordable microcar with a starting price of around $10,000. Remarkably, within just one year, the Mini EV surpassed Tesla's Model 3 sales in the region. Since then, the electric microcar has expanded its lineup to include variations such as the Mini EV convertible and the Wuling Air EV (also known as the MG Comet in India), which became the automaker's first international EV.

Building on the success of the Mini EV, SGMW has released several new all-electric vehicles, including the Baojun Yep, a compact car resembling a mini Ford Bronco. This vehicle has generated significant excitement in China's market.

In addition to the Baojun Cloud, SGMW also launched the Wuling Bingo in late March. The sub-$10,000 EV achieved an impressive 16,383 deliveries in its first month on the market. This marks the joint venture's second EV release this year.

The Baojun Cloud, also known as the Baojun Yunduo, has been officially listed in China. This electric hatchback is available in four versions, with prices ranging from 95,800 yuan to 123,800 yuan ($17.1K). With its compact size and seating for five, the Baojun Cloud is expected to compete against the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3.

Compared to BYD's Dolphin, the Baojun Cloud is slightly larger, measuring 4,295 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, and 1,652 mm in height. The Baojun Cloud offers two battery options, 37.9 kWh and 50.6 kWh, providing cruising ranges of 360 km (223 mi) and 460 km (285 mi) respectively. Inside the vehicle, you will find an 8.8-inch full LCD instrument screen and either a 10.1-inch or 15.6-inch central control screen. The Baojun Cloud also features the LingOS 2.0 ecological cockpit, making it the first model to include this technology.

In response to China's competitive EV market, Volkswagen recently reduced prices for its ID.3 electric car. This move has proven successful, with SAIC-VW reporting a sales increase of over 300% last month, reaching 7,378 units.
