GM's "Ultium-Powered Coupes" Set to Launch in 2026
【Summary】General Motors plans to introduce "Ultium-based coupes" as part of its electric vehicle lineup by 2026. In addition to SUVs and pickups, the company will offer electric versions of the Chevrolet Bolt EV and the Cadillac Celestiq sedan. While GM did not provide further details, it is speculated that the electric Corvette and Camaro could be among the new coupes. Other GM brands like Cadillac and Buick may also introduce electric coupes.
General Motors is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with a range of models based on its dedicated EV architectures and Ultium batteries. So far, the company has introduced SUVs and pickups such as the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, Hummer EV SUV, and Cadillac Lyriq. However, more Ultium-based electric SUVs and trucks are on the way, including the Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Cadillac Escalade IQ, and Buick Electra E5 SUV.
In addition to SUVs and trucks, General Motors will also include the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt EV and the $340,000+ Cadillac Celestiq ultra-luxury sedan in its Ultium lineup. Furthermore, the company has hinted at the addition of at least one coupe to its EV stable. In a video announcing the availability of V2H (vehicle-to-home) capability across its Ultium-based EV lineup by 2026, GM mentioned that bi-directional charging will be offered on "Ultium based coupes."
This announcement has sparked speculation about GM's plans for Ultium-based coupes. While the automaker did not provide specific details, it is worth considering iconic nameplates like the Camaro and Corvette. GM President Mark Reuss previously confirmed that a "fully electric version" of the Corvette would follow the E-Ray hybrid, which is set to enter production in the near future. There have also been reports about GM potentially turning the Corvette into a standalone EV brand, offering four-door and SUV models by 2025.
As for the Camaro, it may have a higher chance of becoming an all-electric coupe, especially since GM stated that the 2024 model year would be the last for the current generation. However, the company emphasized that this is not the final chapter for the Camaro nameplate. With the mention of "Ultium-based coupes" in the video, there is hope that both the Corvette and Camaro will transition to Ultium technology while maintaining their distinctive two-door body styles. Additionally, it is possible that GM could introduce BEV coupes under the Cadillac and Buick brands, as seen with the Wildcat Concept.
