GM's Baojun Cloud EV debuts in China at an affordable price

General Motors' joint venture in China, SGMW, has recently launched the Baojun Cloud electric hatchback. Priced at 95,800 yuan ($13.2K), this compact EV is set to make waves in the Chinese market.

SGMW, which is a collaboration between General Motors, SAIC, and Wuling Motors, is known for selling vehicles under the Wuling and Baojun brand names. In 2020, SGMW introduced the Wuling Hongguag Mini EV, an affordable microcar that quickly surpassed Tesla's Model 3 sales in the region.

Building on the success of the Mini EV, SGMW has expanded its electric vehicle lineup. The Baojun Cloud is one of their newest offerings and is available in four different versions, ranging from 95,800 yuan to 123,800 yuan ($17.1K).

With a length of 4,295 mm, width of 1,850 mm, and height of 1,652 mm, the Baojun Cloud is expected to compete against competitors like the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3. It offers a choice of two battery options, providing a cruising range of either 360 km or 460 km.

Inside the Baojun Cloud, drivers will find modern features such as an 8.8-inch full LCD instrument screen and a 10.1-inch or 15.6-inch central control screen. Additionally, this electric model boasts the LingOS 2.0 ecological cockpit, making it a technologically advanced option.

The Chinese EV market is highly competitive, with Volkswagen recently reducing prices on their ID.3 electric car to stay competitive. This move has proven successful, with SAIC-VW reporting a 300% increase in ID.3 sales last month.
