AI's Influence on Car Design

Sasha Selipanov, a world-renowned designer who has worked with various automakers, recently launched his own design firm called Hardline27. With over two decades of experience in the industry, Selipanov has contributed to the design of notable cars such as the Lamborghini Huracan, Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo and Chiron, Genesis' Essentia concept, and Koenigsegg CC850 and Gemera. Now, he is creating his own masterpiece.

Launching Hardline27 was a dream come true for Selipanov, but it took many years of working with famous car companies and industry players to make it happen. Through his extensive experience, Selipanov has gained deep insights into the role of design in the automotive world and the future of the industry.

In an interview, Selipanov discussed his perspective on beauty in automotive design. He believes that beauty is not purely subjective, but rather has certain universal qualities that captivate us. He questions the idea that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and suggests that it may be a marketing strategy to encourage people to buy products without feeling guilty about their choices.

When asked about his favorite car design, Selipanov humbly avoids ranking his own work and instead mentions several cars that he finds attractive. He appreciates both sports cars and regular cars that have a unique artistic value and functional approach.

The interviewer also asked Selipanov about the influence of AI on car design. Selipanov believes that AI tools can be useful for generating design ideas, but he values the vision and creativity of human designers who offer well-considered solutions to problems. He sees AI as a tool to illustrate ideas, not as a source of innovative solutions.

One aspect of automotive design that Selipanov believes is not getting enough attention is sustainability. While the conversation around sustainability focuses on carbon footprints, Selipanov emphasizes the importance of considering the longevity of vehicles and the product refresh cycle. He questions whether vehicles should be as replaceable as smartphones and suggests that the sustainability discussion should include these factors.

In terms of the design process, Selipanov finds coming up with a good idea to be the most difficult part. He faces self-doubt and the challenge of offering one or two good ideas instead of showing multiple mediocre ones. Despite the challenges, he finds the process ultimately rewarding.

This is only part two of the interview series with Sasha Selipanov. Stay tuned for his thoughts on five cars that are available for sale or about to go on sale.
