High-Risk Vehicle Ownership and Car Theft Concerns

Car theft is a fear that many drivers have, and it turns out that not all vehicles have the same risk of being stolen. According to a recent report from the Highway Loss Data Institute, the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat is proportionately more likely to be stolen than other cars.

Drivers of the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat report 60 times more thefts than the average for all passenger vehicles. Another Dodge model, the Charger HEMI, also has a high theft claim frequency, with rates 20 times higher than average. The report highlights that both the Charger and Challenger models have consistently ranked among the top five most stolen vehicles since 2011.

However, the situation has worsened in recent years. From 2019 to 2021, Hellcat models had 18 vehicle thefts per 1,000 vehicles. But in the 2020-2022 models, this number increased to 25. To put this into perspective, the most stolen model vehicle from 2017 to 2019, the Infiniti Q60, only had two thefts per 1,000.

The numbers shocked HLDI Senior Vice President Matt Moore, who warned Hellcat owners to be vigilant. He emphasized the significance of these theft rates and advised Hellcat owners to check their driveways. Interestingly, both the HEMI and Hellcat engines come with the Deluxe Security Alarm upgrade as a standard feature.
