Honda's Hidden Gem: Unveiling the Prelude's Untold History

The 1978 model year Prelude was not Honda's finest creation. While it had an appealing appearance, it lacked in terms of mechanical performance. With a mere 72 horsepower, it was far from impressive. Its acceleration time of 19 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour was leisurely, to say the least. Surprisingly, even the Zastava Yugo, known for its sluggishness, could complete a quarter-mile run in the same time.

Fortunately, the first generation Prelude only lasted until 1983. The arrival of the second generation Prelude marked a significant improvement. With a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, it unleashed 100 horsepower, making it much more powerful. The suspension enhancements also contributed to its competent driving capabilities, elevating it above the average Accord. Critics praised its performance and handling, recognizing it as a vast improvement over its predecessor. Additionally, it boasted a respectable fuel efficiency of 38 miles per gallon.

Honda continued to refine the Prelude, making it faster and more exciting to drive. The introduction of the Honda Prelude Si in 1985 brought further enhancements. It featured a larger 1.9-liter engine, producing an additional 10 horsepower. Notably, this model incorporated electronic injection, a technology derived from Honda's Formula 1 expertise, replacing the previous carbureted systems. The second generation Prelude concluded in 1987, leaving a lasting impression.
