Mitsubishi Motors has announced that it will be upgrading its Minicab-MiEV all-electric vehicle for 2024, in response to the growing demand for electric light commercial vehicles. The new model, called Minicab EV, is specifically designed for urban commercial use and will be available for purchase in Japan starting from December 21.

Mitsubishi introduced the Minicab platform back in 1966 with a kei-class combustion-engine pickup truck. This was followed by a kei van based on the same platform and various other models introduced over the years. In recent times, major players in Japan's kei car segment have been focusing on electrifying their offerings and introducing zero-emission variants of their commercial vehicles. Mitsubishi launched the Minicab i-MiEV, a five-door hatchback, in 2009 as the world's first mass-produced electric car. The Minicab-MiEV, an electric version of its popular kei van, was then introduced in December 2011.

The new Minicab EV is an evolution of the Minicab-MiEV, which has sold approximately 13,000 units since its launch 12 years ago. The upgraded model features a larger battery for an improved cruising range and enhanced safety and convenience features to better cater to the needs of commercial customers. Design-wise, it remains similar to its predecessor, with a utilitarian styling and compact monobox design that make it ideal for last-mile delivery services in urban areas. It will be available as a two-seat cargo van with ample storage space or as a four-seater for operators who require less cargo space.

The compact zero-emission powertrain is where the most significant changes have been made. The 2024 Minicab EV model will come with a new generation of electric components, including an integrated motor drive with a 31-electric motor and inverter housed in a single casing. This not only reduces volume and cost but also ensures quieter operation. While the top speed hasn't been revealed, the electric motor produces 195 Nm (144 lb-ft) of torque.

The Minicab EV will draw power from a 20-battery pack, which allows for an extended cruising range of 180 km or 112 miles per charge (in WLTC mode), representing a 35% increase compared to the previous model. It takes approximately 7.5 hours to fully recharge the battery using 200V (15A) AC, but it also offers optional compatibility with DC fast charging stations, allowing the battery to reach 80% capacity in about 42 minutes.

In terms of safety, the new Minicab EV comes with Automatic High Beam (AHB), ABS, SRS, hill-start assist, lane departure alerts, front collision mitigation, parking sensors, airbags, and more. The vehicle is also equipped with improved front and rear shocks for a smoother ride. Additional features include a 100-volt AC power outlet at the rear of the floor console, which is useful for powering tools and appliances, as well as optional USB ports for charging mobile devices while on the move.

There is currently no information available regarding international availability for the Mitsubishi Minicab EV. However, it will be available for purchase in Japan on December 21. The two-seat version will be priced at ¥2,431,000 (US$16,300), while the four-seater will be priced at ¥2,486,000 (US$16,640), which is the same price as the previous model. With its improved cruising range and enhanced safety features, the 2024 Minicab EV will be an attractive option for businesses looking to reduce their carbon footprint and operating costs.
