Hyundai Ioniq BEV Sales Surged in August 2023
【Summary】Hyundai reported a one percent increase in vehicle sales in the US in August, with the year-to-date result up 12 percent. Sales of Hyundai's electric cars, the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, saw an impressive 245 percent increase year-over-year, with 5,235 units sold in August. The Hyundai Kona Electric also experienced significant growth, up 653 percent year-over-year.
Hyundai Motor America reported a one percent increase in vehicle sales in the United States in August compared to the previous year. The total number of sales for the year so far has reached 526,186 units, marking a 12 percent year-over-year increase.
The sales of Hyundai's all-electric cars, the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, have been steadily rising. In August, the company sold 5,235 units of the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 in the US, which is a remarkable 245 percent increase compared to the previous year. These sales accounted for 8.0 percent of the total volume, making it the second-highest monthly result after July.
In addition to the Ioniq models, Hyundai has also seen growth in sales of the Kona Electric and several plug-in hybrid models. Although specific numbers for the Kona Electric are not available as it is counted together with the ICE Kona, Hyundai stated that it saw a 653 percent year-over-year increase in sales. The Santa Fe PHEV saw a 55 percent increase, while the Tucson PHEV saw a 150 percent increase.
Hyundai's focus on rechargeable vehicles is paying off. The Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 achieved their second-highest monthly sales ever, with 3,572 and 1,663 units sold, respectively.
As for the sales of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 in 2023, over 28,000 units have been sold so far, marking a 63 percent increase compared to the previous year. The breakdown of sales for the Ioniq family is as follows: 21,348 units of the Ioniq 5 (up 24 percent year-over-year), 6,653 units of the Ioniq 6 (new model), and an overall total of 28,001 units sold, representing a 63 percent year-over-year increase and a 5.3 percent share of the market.
In 2022, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 accounted for a total of 22,982 sales, making up approximately 3.2 percent of the total volume for the year.
Unfortunately, the official sales statistics do not include data on other all-electric or plug-in hybrid models, as they are combined with conventional or non-rechargeable hybrids.
The hydrogen fuel cell model, Hyundai Nexo, sold 18 units last month, the same as the previous year. The total number of Nexo units delivered this year is 157, which represents a 51 percent decrease compared to the previous year.
