The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has called on the government to consider several factors as it launches a new inquiry into the electric vehicle (EV) experience. The inquiry aims to gather feedback from industry and customers about the challenges they face with EVs, as the government evaluates the feasibility of its 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles.

Hayley Pells, the IMI's policy and public affairs lead, expressed the organization's full support for the government's ambition to transition to zero-emission vehicles. Pells highlighted the importance of understanding the barriers, costs, and benefits associated with the phase-out dates of 2030 and 2035. The IMI is eager to contribute to the inquiry and work alongside the government, its members, and the wider industry to ensure a smooth transition to electric vehicles.

Pells emphasized the need for robust incentives to create a strong UK EV market. While the phase-out dates are ambitious, she believes they can be achieved with collective effort, industry partnerships, and clear policy guidelines. Pells also stressed the significance of developing a clear roadmap with key dates and timelines to assist stakeholders in preparing for the transition.

In addition to incentives and infrastructure, Pells urged the government to address the issue of battery disposal and recycling. She emphasized the importance of considering the entire lifecycle of EVs when assessing their sustainability.
