Jaguar's new era: Electric four-door GT

Jaguar is preparing to lead its all-electric future with a £100,000 four-door GT, and a new image gives us a clearer idea of what to expect. The rear image reveals that the GT will deviate from the design direction of Jaguar's current lineup, featuring distinct squared-off angles and a wide stance. The design elements, such as solid surfacing and advanced aerodynamic treatment, are expected to enhance the overall look of the car. Additionally, the GT will have razor-thin tail-lights and a prominent diffuser to boost its range.

Newly appointed JLR boss Adrian Mardell expressed a strong desire to take Jaguar in a new direction with a fresh visual identity that captures the brand's emotion. The team of designers at Jaguar produced several design options for consideration, and the image we see now is the first interpretation of the new design language. Mardell describes it as "jaw-dropping" and it was the unanimous choice of everyone involved.

The rapid development process, known as Project Renaissance, was initiated by JLR's Chief Creative Officer, Gerry McGovern. Three teams within JLR's design studio were given a common brief to create three distinct types of vehicles, resulting in 18 clay-model proposals in just three months. It is anticipated that several prototypes of the new GT will be tested on the road by the end of the year, with an official unveiling planned for April or May 2024, and sales expected to begin in 2025.

Furthermore, the new GT gives us a glimpse of what to expect from the two new crossovers that will complete the Jaguar lineup. Mardell emphasizes the importance of having a family look and association among the vehicles. As part of JLR's Reimagine strategy, Jaguar is being fully rebooted and positioned alongside Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery as one of the four brand pillars of JLR. The GT, along with the other two cars in the lineup, will be manufactured at the Solihull plant, which will also produce the all-electric Range Rover.

The GT is set to become the most powerful Jaguar production car ever made, surpassing the brand's existing EV, the I-Pace, in terms of range and charging capacity. Although specific motor outputs and performance figures have not been released, Jaguar claims that the new model will have a range of up to 700km (435 miles) and the ability to add approximately 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes of rapid charging.
