JLR to unveil 'Defender Sport' as brand expands
【Summary】JLR is set to release a new small electric SUV called the 'Defender Sport'. It will be a fully electric model utilizing the same platform as the electric version of the Defender. The new vehicle is expected to arrive in 2027 and will have styling cues borrowed from the core Defender model. JLR is diversifying its brand and has announced several new EVs to arrive in the future.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is undergoing significant changes, including separating its core models into individual brands and introducing new electric vehicles (EVs) in the near future. One of the rumors that has been circulating for a while is the release of a smaller version of the Defender, and it seems that this rumor is becoming more and more likely to come true.
Recently, JLR announced an electric version of the Defender, and it is anticipated that a smaller model will also be introduced as a fully electric vehicle. This smaller version will utilize the same platform known as the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA).
In an exclusive interview with JLR CEO Adrian Mardell, he mentioned that they are exploring the possibility of creating other vehicles within the Defender family. He expects that by the next Global Media Day, they will have a clear understanding of what they are comfortable producing using the EMA platform.
There are speculations that the new smaller Defender could be named the Defender Sport, following a similar naming convention to the Range Rover Sport. Exclusive renders give us a glimpse of what the Defender Sport might look like.
It is likely that the smaller car will borrow design elements from the core Defender model to establish a distinctive appearance for each brand within the JLR family. Expect to see shorter overhangs and a boxy utilitarian look, which are characteristic features of the Defender lineage, incorporated into the design of the Defender Sport.
