Lexus RZ450e: Embracing the Electric Revolution

Lexus and its parent company Toyota have been pioneers in the hybrid engine market for many years. However, they have been slower to enter the electric vehicle (EV) market. That is until now, with the release of the RZ450e. James Fisher had the opportunity to test drive this new electric car.

The car market has seen significant changes in recent years, particularly in terms of electrification. It's hard to believe that the first hybrid car was released over two decades ago. The Toyota Prius, the first mass-produced hybrid car, hit the market in Japan in 1997. Shortly after, Lexus, Toyota's luxury division, introduced hybrid versions of their RX model, known as the RX400h and RX450h.

Lexus has been a pioneer in the hybrid market for over 15 years, even when it wasn't considered fashionable or urgent to address climate change. However, it's surprising that it took them so long to develop an all-electric vehicle (EV) from the ground up. But now, they have finally released the RZ450e.

Another longstanding event that has gained popularity in recent years is the Glastonbury Festival for Contemporary Performing Arts. Similar to Toyota and Lexus, the festival has been ahead of the curve in raising awareness and funds for combating climate change and pollution. It seemed fitting to test the RZ at this festival, as both brands have a shared commitment to climate justice.

Interestingly, both Lexus and Glastonbury had something else in common - James Fisher. He had never been to the festival before, nor had he ever driven an electric car. It was a weekend of firsts and lasts for him.

When James first saw the RZ, he was pleasantly surprised. Unlike many modern cars that try to look futuristic, the RZ maintains a sense of composure and familiarity. The front end is dynamic, and the absence of a combustion engine allows for excellent visibility while driving. The interior is futuristic yet comfortable, with a large infotainment screen and luxurious materials. The car even gives you a warm welcome when you enter, a feature called Omotenashi.

The RZ offers a decent-sized boot and spacious back seats. It also features a panoramic glass window that can be frosted or unfrosted with the push of a button. Overall, the car combines practicality and luxury.

However, James encountered some challenges when it came to driving the car. The RZ is equipped with numerous driving aids and safety features, including one that watches the driver. While these features are undoubtedly well-intentioned, they can sometimes feel intrusive and limit the driver's autonomy. The constant beeping and lack of clear notifications can be disconcerting.

Despite these challenges, the RZ is a fun car to drive. It offers impressive acceleration and handling, thanks to its low center of gravity and advanced suspension. It strikes a balance between comfort and speed, making it enjoyable for both petrol-heads and those seeking a comfortable ride. The car performs well on the motorway, providing a smooth and quiet driving experience.

One of the biggest challenges for EVs like the RZ is convincing consumers that they are not significantly different from traditional cars. The RZ succeeds in this aspect, as after a few minutes of driving, one forgets that it is an electric vehicle. Charging the car is also relatively convenient, with a 20-minute wait at a service station being manageable.

After spending five days at the Glastonbury Festival, James appreciated the environmental benefits of driving an EV. Despite being parked in the sun for four days, the battery charge remained unaffected. The RZ also performed well in standstill traffic, providing a comfortable and relaxing experience for passengers.

While the RZ has its issues, such as limited range and overbearing safety features, these are expected to improve over time. Overall, the RZ is a great choice for those considering entering the EV market. It combines practicality, luxury, and a fun driving experience. Viva la electric revolución!
